Mayan Cities & Sacred Sites

Maya culture flourished in 2000 BC. Once part of great ceremonial and trading centers, majestic temples now lie mysteriously silent. More than anywhere else in the Mayan world, great cities in Belize are being unearthed for the first time. Belize is home to many Maya ruins including Santa Rita, Cerros, Lamanai, Altun Ha, Caracol, Cahal Peche, El Pilar and the infamous Lubaantun. An intriguing tale associated with Lubaantun concerns the discovery of a life size crystal skull. Anna Mitchell-Hedges, adopted daughter of British adventurer and explorer F.A. Mitchell-Hedges, discovered the skull beneath an altar in 1926 at this site.
